The meat, the garden and the cheeses, regional products most appreciated abroad

Both meat and fruit and vegetable production contributed almost 400 million euros for their trade with third countries. Dairy products, with cheese, sold 260 million

Meat products contributed more than 395 million euros to the export activities of Castilla-La Mancha. This set of activities, mainly linked to pig farms and vaccines, represents, after beverages (wine), the largest agri-food segment according to the amount entered from its trade with third countries. Meat production represents a key economic possibility in the economy of the southern plateau, with an important share in both the internal and external markets. Derivatives of pork, beef and lamb. The orchard of Castilla-La Mancha added another 395 million euros for the accounts of the region in its relationship with the exterior. The most outstanding references to the fruits, vegetables and legumes that germinate in the extensive territory of the autonomous community are onions, garlic, tomatoes, lettuce and summer fruits. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food corresponding to 2017 confirm how crops in the region are a source of income and work in the regional primary sector. The orchard occupies an area of ​​51.967 hectares in Castilla-La Mancha. The territory devoted to the production of vegetables represents almost one seventh of the national total (387.895 hectares). The region is the third community, behind Andalusia (129.853 hectares) and Murcia (54.689 hectares), which uses the most space for planting these foods.

Regarding the chapter of fats and oils, the regional companies dedicated to this sector added more than 200 million in sales destined for export. Although the statistics of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism do not break down according to the specific product, olive oil is intuited as the main recipient of purchases from others. The liquid gold produced in the autonomous territory, especially in the provinces of Toledo and Ciudad Real, is valued abroad for its excellent organoleptic characteristics. There is also a notable production of sunflower oil and other oils and fats of different origins.

Dairy and eggs contributed more than 258 million to foreign regional accounting: Cheeses are one of the hallmarks of the region beyond the limits of Spain. Those made with sheep's milk are the most traditional and origin of the Manchego Cheese Denomination of Origin, although those products fermented with cow's or goat's milk also have international appeal, including those that mix the three milks. Dairy production is especially important in the surroundings of Talavera de la Reina. The millions of liters that are produced throughout the community are used for direct consumption of the liquid or for the preparation, in addition to cheeses, of yoghurts. In addition, poultry farms have a strong establishment in the autonomy, being notable both the use of meat and egg production.

Food preparations totaled 140 million. The section that includes sugar, coffee and cocoa added 44 million. Likewise, and despite being a region without a coast and, therefore, without access to the sea, fishing products contributed more than 33 million euros for sales abroad. The canning sector and fish farms fostered the business.

The cereals represented barely five million euros for their sale. Although it is a traditional crop in a large part of the territory, it tends to be replaced by other more profitable and easier to market. Feed for animal consumption, for its part, provided more than 19 million accounts in the region with third parties

The seeds barely reached half a million euros, while tobacco sales, formerly common in specific parts of the region, were traded abroad for just over 89.000 euros.
